Drawing on multiple years of research examining how shared micromobility systems (shared e-scooters and e-bikes) interact with existing mobility systems and roadway infrastructure in Washington, D.C., Dr. Yan will present key insights on shared micromobility as an emerging form of urban transportation. The talk will highlight: (1) how shared micromobility facilitates travel for different population groups; (2) the implications of dockless micromobility for existing public transit and station-based bikeshare systems; and (3) how different types of bicycle facilities influence micromobility usage and route choice. A central theme of the presentation is the use of data science and artificial intelligence methods to advance scientific understanding of shared micromobility systems and to support more human-centered active transportation planning and policy. Sign up for the event here.
Dr. Xiang (Jacob) Yan is an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Florida. His work focuses on leveraging data-driven and AI-enabled methods to advance public transit and sustainable transportation systems. Bridging urban planning, data science, and transportation engineering, he takes an interdisciplinary approach to transportation research that connects technological innovations with community needs. He works closely with public agencies and community groups to develop intelligent decision-support tools that can help them better plan for and manage transit, active transportation, and new mobility systems.
